Evaluation of Urinary Iron
|
BASELINE URINE: The reference range for iron in baseline urine is < 45 mcg/g creatinine and represents the 95th percentile, meaning that 95% of baseline urine iron measurements are below 45 mcg/g creatinine. Significantly higher values are rare and are usually caused by blood in urine.
EDTA PROVOCATION: Chelating agents such as EDTA have a strong affinity for iron. Iron test values are generally elevated and do not constitute microhematuria. The infusion of the chelating agents NaMgEDTA or NaCaEDTA increases the binding of free iron. The chelator-specific reference range for EDTA-provocation urine is < 350 mcg/g creatinine.
DTPA PROVOCATION: CaDTPA or ZnDTPA, have an equal, potentially higher iron-binding capacity than the EDTAs. Since the DTPAs are generally administered in combination with other chelators, and since the type of application affects metal binding (i.e. which chelator is administered first and what time has passed before the second chelator is given), we do not have sufficient data for a statistical evaluation and do not provide an orientation range (OR) for these provocation tests.
DMSA, like DMPS, binds iron poorly. Therefore, no chelator-specific reference range is provided for these chelators.
Note: For samples with missing information, test values are compared to the reference ranges for baseline urine.

Information from Federal Environment Agencies
|
The Soil Protection Commission is providing information on "The Fascination of the Microbiome: How Soil Health and Human Health Are Interrelated." Data on wastewater treatment and water protection are also being highlighted. This will enable the identification of water bodies with elevated levels of pollution nationwide. Information is also provided by the US FDA.

Titanium (Ti)
|
Food: The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has declared titanium dioxide, also known as E171 as "no longer safe." A processing aid has been banned in EU food products since August 2022. The European Commission issued the ban based on an assessment by the EFSA, which could not rule out potential genotoxicity. This leads to the conclusion that titanium dioxide is likely carcinogenic. However, food products manufactured before August 7, 2022, may continue to be sold until their date of expiry.
Pharmaceuticals: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is used in pharmaceuticals as a white pigment or as a UV filter. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), approximately 91,000 human medicines and 800 veterinary medicines across Europe contain titanium dioxide, including almost all products for oral use such as tablets, capsules, granules, and powders, as well as cutaneous, inhalational, and transdermal preparations. The use of TiO2 in pharmaceuticals is permitted until further notice.

Breaking Cycles: Economic Empowerment in Uganda
|
We are proud to actively support the vital work of Twezule Pathways. Together, we empower women in Uganda through microloans and vocational training, creating a clear path toward economic independence.
Twezule Pathways is a Ugandan women-led organization empowering women and communities to rise from vulnerability to self-reliance. With our (and
your) help we support the efforts of African women whose goal is to transform Ugandan communities in many ways. By teaching women to be self-sufficient, economic barriers are removed. Women who are able to feed their children and themselves escape poverty and are automatically less prone to gender-based violence.
More information on this organization is listed on their website:
